Restoration...

Kluttz Piano Company has been committed to restoring pianos since the doors opened in 1931. Restored pianos can be family heirlooms or antique pieces but the end result is an investment that will give many years of music to you and your family.

We have over 20,000 square feet of space with 6,000 square feet dedicated to piano restoration. We do work for individuals, estates, churches, schools and businesses. We are authorized to do warranty work.

Not only is the outside wood restored to its original beauty but the inside internal workings will once again be restored to create the beautiful sounds that the piano once knew.

The restoration of a piano involves a comprehensive process.

The piano is assigned an identification number and completely taken apart. The original finish is removed from the case and the various boards. The next department sands down the piano and makes all necessary repairs to the wood to get it ready for the finishing.

The finish process includes staining, sealing and the application of multiple coats of lacquer.

As the outside of the piano is making its way through the restoration process, the internal workings are also being restored.

A critical part of the piano is the pinblock. It must be strong enough to withstand the tons of pressure exerted by the strings. Worn out or cracked pinblocks are replaced with meticulous care with new ones hand crafted for precise placement of the pins.

The heart of the piano is the cast-iron frame. It is carefully sanded, rebronzed and hand-lettered.

The piano is then ready to receive the new set of strings that are set to the specifications required by each instrument.

The action work is dependent on the amount of wear and tear that the piano has had. Hardened or worn felts must be replaced in order to achieve the smooth playing action that the piano needs.

The key tops are usually replaced with acrylics or legal ivory.

The regulation of the action involves adjusting all of the moving parts in order to assure the best touch and sound.

The hammers are replaced or restored to bring out the tone of the piano.

The final step is the re-assembly of the piano with all of its parts. The piano is inspected to insure that the restoration has been done to the highest level of quality.
